A photobook is a book with photographs embedded in it. Since the invention of the book, artists have used it as their medium to tell stories. But books are more than just for reading now; they've taken on another role with the advent of digital technology and social media platforms which have developed a whole new lexicon of meanings through shared experiences. This is a showcase of one such photobooks created by photographer Nozomi Kurahashi to share her journey from being lost to finding music and inspiring others along her way to share themselves. Nozomi was infatuated with music. When she was in high school, she played in several bands. She thought that playing music meant being a rock star. But her dreams were shattered when she couldn't even get the attention of the record companies even after spending years honing her skills, and working at a local venue. Despair soon took over her life; she focused only on the negatives of herself and lost hope on making it big in such a saturated market such as Japan. But before giving up entirely, Nozomi found an old guitar in her house and learned to play it while building her own confidence and self-esteem. She started to write songs and record her own music. She dropped out of school and decided to open the café where she served coffee and baked goods, hoping that one day people would pay attention to her music. She played for an audience and found herself smiling and enjoying the moment. And gradually, she realized that "music is something you can do on your own." She soon realized that if she could just learn to love herself for who she was, then it would be easier to share those feelings with those around her, those who accepted her as she was. Shortly after finding herself, Nozomi left her hometown and moved to Tokyo to continue pursuing her dream. There, she began studying photography at Musashino Art University and learned her skills through the five years of study and practice. She recalls: "Weirdly I feel like I'll be able to tell my life story with photos. The first book is about me as a young girl; the second book is about my time as a young woman; the third book is about starting over; and the fourth book is about making it as an artist. It's like a history of my entire life, which I feel like I could read over and over again. I think it will be a good gift to my closest friends and family." ABOUT NOZOMI KURAHASHI Nozomi Kurahashi has been pursuing photography as a means of expression since childhood. Growing up in a small town, she was always interested in the urban landscape and inhabitants she saw on her way to school and back home. She also loved reading the works of authors such as Yukio Mishima and Haruki Murakami, which helped shape her vision of the world and feelings for others. Her interest in human nature and gender issues led her to study psychology at university before she started taking photographs.
